RIP - FORMER PRESIDENT OF NLC NIGERIA - MR. PASCHAL MYELERI BAFYAU (1947 - 2012)

A former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Pascal Bafyau, died in Abuja recently.
Comrade Pascal Myeleri Bafyau, as he was popularly known in organised labour circle, died on May 15, 2012, reportedly following cardiac arrest, lived his life largely for others, essentially the Nigerian working class. In 1969, when he was only 22 years old, he was elected Chairman of the North East branch of the Nigeria Union of Railwaymen (NUR). Labour unionism was, and is still rarely the concern of young adults of such age. From that early interest in organised labour, Bafyau rose to become the General Secretary of the entire NUR in 1982. He was elected the third national President of the Nigeria Labour Congress - the umbrella organisation of the organised labour in Nigeria - in 1988 and was re-elected in 1992.

Comrade Bafyau was, at various times, a member of several boards including the Urban Development Bank of Nigeria (UDBN), the Nigeria Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), and the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). He was also a Member of the 1986 Political Bureau aimed at preparing the grounds for a return to civil rule; in 1987, he was appointed to the Constituent Assembly, and was also Chairman of the Agency for Mass Literacy and Adult Education. Comrade Bafyau, who is from Adamawa State, was a member of both the defunct Social Democratic Party and the PDP. He was 65 years old.

May his soul rest in perfect peace, Amen.
